It’s a lot and it can be hard to know what to read next. Trust me, we know. This the third list of all the books, each organized differently because we have a lot of readers and what works for one doesn’t necessarily work for others.

The first is a chronological reading order Eric Flint created years ago and updated several times. It attempts to put the books in mostly chronological order, which is, of course, a huge challenge since there is so much overlap in the time each book covers.

The second list is based on storylines. It breaks the books down into chunks of ten books or less, with quite a few less than five books. Personally, I’m re-reading the series using this list because it helps me remember details from one story to the next.

There is also a 1632 list challenge created by a fan and shared here because it’s pretty excellent. It lists the novels and you check off which ones you have read. It is roughly in chronological order, but the Ring of Fire Press novels are included at the end and are not chronological. They also include out of print novels and, in a few cases, multiple versions of the same novel when the novels were republished.

This list doesn’t include most issues of the two magazines, the Grantville Gazette and Eric Flint’s 1632 & Beyond. There were 102 volumes of the Gazette published from 2004 until Eric’s death in 2022. The nine Baen issues use a Roman numberal instead of a regular one in the title. Volumes I-IV and 1-4 are the same, except the Baen volumes include an additional story by Eric. Volumes V-IX are “best of” and feature storeis from many different volumes of the Gazette. Starting with volume 11 in May 2007 and continuing through July 2022, an issue of the Gazette was published every odd-numbered month. These are currently only available in electronic versions.

In September 2023, barely a year after Eric died and the Grantville Gazette closed, the first issue of a new magazine was published. Eric Flint’s 1632 & Beyond is very much the same as the Gazette, but it doesn’t have the “Annex” and has a lot less non-fiction. The Annex had general science fiction stories at the end of the magazine. 1632 & Beyond is exclusively focused on 1632 and the other Assiti Shards.

The Assiti are a race of alien artists. A shard from their artwork fell and hit earth, causing Grantville to move through time and space. This happens again. Some of the shards don’t do anything noticeable, but some do. These are the four additional “shards” (Time Spike, The Alexander Inheritance, The Crossing, and An Angel Called Peterbilt). They are included in the list below, and noted as shards. When there are additional stories within a shard, I noted which shard they are part of.

While they are not listed because the list is already quite long, thank you very much, every January, March, May, July, September, and November from 2007 through the present (with the exception of September 2022-July 2023), an issue of one of the two 1632 magazines has been published electronically. All issues of 1632 & Beyond are also available as print on demand. You can buy electronic versions of all the magazines from our website at 1632Magazine.com. The new magazine is also available in print on demand on Amazon and digitally pretty much all over the place, including libraries.

These are in reverse order, with the most recent ones first.

Other

When Eric died in 2022, both the Grantville Gazette and Ring of Fire Press (RoFP) closed. There were quite a few 1632 and Assiti Shards novels from RoFP. Baen Books stepped in and agreed to republish quite a few of those, but not all of them. These are the titles that were published that we either do not expect to see republished or we simply do not know if they will be.

Baen eArcs

A final note for those of you who made it throuth this whole list. Baen sells advance copies of their novels, calle e-arcs (Advanced Reader Copies – but electronic versions) so readers don’t have to wait, and that includes books that are only being released in electonic format. These aren’t final editions. They may be partials (in the case of electronic only books in particular) or they may ore simply be unproofed.

Eric Flint on e-arcs (15 October 2016 11:06):

Mutter. How many times do people have to be told that e-ARCs are UNPROOFED manuscripts? Trust me, the wrong date of May 2000 is hardly the only goof in the e-ARCs. That’s why I will be spending days poring over the page proofs when they arrive, as will a professional proof-reader — and then it will be sent to another proof-reader to double-check everything. (And there will _still_ be typos getting through. The damn things are like cockroaches in a big old apartment buildings. A few always survive… for years… and years…)
